The birthplace and boyhood homestead of Samuel Creveling, Sr. in West Portal, NJ. Samuel Creveling, Sr. later moved with his family and lived in a one room house along what is now Rt. 57 in Brass Castle, NJ. The original home, although built around, still stands and his currently occupied by a Creveling descendant. The Samuel Creveling, Sr. Burying Ground is located a few hundred yards northeast of the homestead and is in danger of becoming swallowed up by development of the land. The Samuel Creveling, Sr. farmstead was originally owned by his in-laws, the Thompson family.

The photo (above) of Samuel Creveling Bodine (1834-1897) was taken in 1863. Samuel Creveling Bodine was the great grandson of Johannes and Eva Loecher Creveling, Sr. He was the grandson of Samuel and Mary Thompson Creveling, Sr. (1760-1822). He was the son of Mary A. Creveling Bodine (1801-1844) and Joseph Maddison Bodine (1798-1866). Lt. Colonel Joseph Henry Bodine (1837-1889), the brother of Samuel Creveling Bodine, was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted in Co. H, 27th New York Infantry as 1st Lieutenant on May 21st 1861. Promoted to Captain on February 10th 1862, Major on July 24th 1862, and Lieutenant-Colonel on November 21st 1862. Discharged on May 31st 1863 in Elmira, NY.
Obituary: The Mount Morris (Mount Morris, N.Y.) Union of 8 Aug 1889. Col. Joseph H. Bodine died at Geneseo on Monday of this week aged 52 years. We are indebted to Mr. Norman Seymour for the following sketch of his life: Col. Bodine was born in Orleans county, N.Y. He came to this village in 1856, when just attaining his majority and engaged with his father, the late John [sic] Bodine, in the laundry business and soon after organized the firm of Bodine Manufacturing Co., which for some years extensively manufactured machinery and the Turbine Water Wheels, &c. He was in the war of the Rebellion and went out in 1861 as Lieutenant in Co. H of the 27th New York and by his meritorious services was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel and returned in May, 1863, with his small band of war worn veterans whose welcomed to our village was one of the most exciting here of any event of the war. In 1867, he removed to Jefferson City, Missouri, and was largely engaged in the iron manufacture and was once Mayor of the city and also one of the military staff of Gen. Brown. Some fifteen years since he removed to Enterprise, Florida, and was extensively engaged in the orange culture. He was one of the prominent businessmen of the town and highly esteemed for his public spirit and generous impulses. Col. Bodine was a favorite of all who knew him; courteous, genial, a true friend, a man of unbending integrity; for several years suffering from a pulmonary affection he has fought for existence with a brave heart and with a noble bearing, ever patient, never despondent, but always abounding with cheer and hope. His death, though not unexpected, has saddened many a friend who will drop a tear to his memory. To mourn his loss he leaves a wife, whose devotion has been unwearied during the years of his impaired health, and he also leaves one brother and two sisters, Mrs. Curtis and Mrs. Hill. His remains were taken on Tuesday to Albion for burial.
