Connie Shatto, 17, president of the senior class and an honor student at Terry Joint High School, was killed Tuesday afternoon when the car in which she was a passenger slammed into the rear of a school bus.

Five other occupants of the car, all Perry Joint High School students, were injured — one seriously — but 42 passengers in the bus, pupils at the high school, escaped harm.

The tragic accident occurred at about 2:15 p. m. at the fog-shrouded intersection of Rt. 34 and Sandy Hollow Road, about two miles south of New Bloomfield.

School had been dismissed early so teachers could attend an in-service training session at Green Park Union High School in Elliottsburg.

Injured in the crash were:

—Terry Hummel, 17, admitted to Carlisle Hospital in unsatisfactory condition with a concussion, fractured arm and facial injuries.

—Linda Kugle, 14, admitted to Carlisle Hospital in satisfactory condition with a fractured jaw and facial cuts.

—Michael Minich, 16, identified by State Police as the driver of the car, treated and discharged at Carlisle Hospital.

Larry Smeigh, 15, also treated then discharged from the hospital.

—Clyde Smith, was treated for bruises at the scene of the accident by Dr. O. K. Stephenson of New Bloomfield.

All of the youths are residents of the Shermans Dale area.

Investigating State Police give this account of the accident:

The school bus, driven by Leon and Mullen of Landisburg RD 1, had halted at the intersection to discharge passengers. A car driven by David E. Way, 17, of Shermans Dale RD 1, and also a Perry Joint student, slowed to come to a stop, but then noticed the Minich car approaching from the rear. Way pulled his car out to the left to make room.

The Minich car was unable to stop in time, however, and struck the left rear of the bus and the right rear fender of the Way car. The Minich car was virtually demolished.

Way and a passenger, Patrick Layser, 17, Shermans Dale RD 1 were not hurt.

An off-duty state Trooper Maurice (Moose) Lawler was one of the first on the scene and called for ambulances and medical aid. Ambulances from Carlisle Hospital, Duncannon and later New Bloomfield went to the scene. The New Bloomfield ambulance was already out on a call.

Dr. Stephenson and Mrs. Paul C. Comp, Perry Joint School Nurse, gave medical aid at the scene.

It was reported one of the school bus passengers was treated for shock and another for a minor back injury.

Connie Shatto, 17 years, was a co-editor of the school yearbook and was active in many school activities. Recently, she had been named to receive a "Good Citizenship" award by the Perry County Chapter of the Daughters' of the American Revolution. She was the Shermans Dale area correspondent for The Times.

Miss Shatto was chairman of the Junior-Senior Prom Committee, chairman of the class ring committee, and chairman of the Junior-Senior Play committee. She was a member of the Shermans Dale Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Survivors include her parents, two brothers, Richard E., Middletown, and Donald L., Shermans Dale; two sisters, Mrs. Marlin Bentzel. and Mrs. Ray Morrison both of Shermans Dale; her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lillie Shatto, Shermans Dale; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Souder, Mechanicsburg.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shermans Dale EUB Church. The Rev. Clarence Ernst, her pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Westminster Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. Friends may call between 7 and 9 p. m. tomorrow at the Clemens Funeral Home, Carlisle.
