Conflicting Records and Research Notes
Births, Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths from the Records of the Town and Churches in Mansfield, Connecticut 1703-1850, Susan W. Dimock, 1898
For brevity, DIMOCK and GURLEY refers to the two sources by the authors' names, which are referenced. DIMOCK looked at data that went back 195 years from records that were in bad shape, illegible and had alternate spellings or misspellings of the same names, as stated in the preface. GURLEY should be the primary authority and DIMOCK is best used to confirm or fill in details. DIMOCK confirms the names and dates of the first 8 of Samuel's children (pp. 88-89) and it fills in details about his third wife, Susannah, daughter of Edward Bosworth, who married Samuel Curtis Dec. 14, 1749 (p. 228), and was widowed when he died Aug. 29, 1783 (p. 313). But DIMOCK gets some things wrong, most likely because it was compiled from chronological records that were grouped into family units and the groupings themselves may have introduced errors. For example, there are two groups for families of Samuel and Hannah Gurley and the children for each of them almost match the children of the first and second marriages in GURLEY. The first group in DIMOCK includes a 9th child (p. 89), following a curious blank line, who belongs with the second marriage. Furthermore, the first group names Hannah Gurley instead of Sarah (Ward) Gurley as the mom, but it is possible that Hannah is part of her full name. The second group (p. 91) correctly names Samuel's second wife, Hannah (Walker) Gurley and correctly lists two of the children by that marriage. Finally, the order and birthdates for Samuel's 9th and 10th children, Hannah and Nahum, are switched between these two sources, so other sources are needed to disambiguate it.
