Many friends throughout the county will be grieved to learn of the death of Mr. Clark W. M. Whitten, which occurred at his home in southeast Chariton on Saturday night, Nov. 11, 1911, at the age of 79 years and 10 months.
Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. C. C. Davis, of the Christian church, were held at his late residence on Monday afternoon at two o'clock, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Chariton cemetery.
Clark William Whitten was born in New York on January 11, 1832. In 1837 he moved with his parents to Toledo, Ohio, and thence to Iowa in 1855, settling in Lucas county, which has been his home most of the time for 56 years.
On April 14, 1859, he was married in Van Buren county, Iowa to Esther Gurwell, who survives him. Five children were born to them three of whom are living. They are Mrs. Amy Littleton, of Chariton, Amhra Whitten, of Greeley, Colorado, and Lora Whitten, of Chariton.
Mr. Whitten enlisted in the service of his country with Company K of the 34th Iowa Infantry, in August, 1862, and served until the end of the war.
During his long residence here Mr. Whitten, by his upright life and courteous, pleasant ways, had won the high regard of all with whom he came in contact. He led a quiet, unobtrusive life, kind to all and indulgent to his family. He was strictly honorable in all his dealings, and had a large circle of friends, who will mourn his demise and who will extend heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing relatives.
