John Calvin Holden was the youngest child and only son born to Mahlon (Beason) Holden and Nancy Elizabeth Stringfield. His sisters were Frances Elizabeth (Fanny) Holden Dawsey, Pearl Holden Dawsey Miller, Lilly Magnolia Holden Dawsey.

John was first married to Sarah Kenmar. They had four children together, Emelda, Joseph, Annie who died at four months of age, and Sarah.

He was then married to Ida Mae Cuevas. They had one son together, Herman Willard Holden.

He then married Flora Mae Cooley. Together they had Lois, Andrew, Zail, Lavernie, Johnny and Margaret.
