ANDERSON — David Pierson Sleet Sr., 78, of Anderson, passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 11, 2009.

David was born Aug. 23, 1931, in New Castle, the son of Harold and Mossie (Kiser) Sleet. He graduated from Connersville High School in 1949. Shortly after high school, David received a football scholarship to play for Anderson College. David enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953. While serving in the U.S. Army, David played in the 399th Army band at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. After serving in the military, David returned to Anderson College where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1960. On Dec. 23, 1961, David married Jeannette Patricia Jones of Anderson.

Over the course of his life, David worked as a teacher, a musician, and in quality control at Delco Remy where he retired in 1999 after 49 years of employment. He loved spending time with family, friends and researching family genealogy.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 48 years, Jeannette (Jones) Sleet of Anderson; children, John Sleet and wife Valerie of San Jose, Calif., June (Sleet) Toliver and husband Ramon of Indianapolis, James Sleet of Fishers, and Jay Sleet of Anderson; seven grandchildren, Kennedy Nicole Sleet, Kourtney Kristin Sleet, John Cody Sleet, Jada McKenzie Sleet, Colin James Sleet, Aaron David Toliver and Sidney Jacob Toliver; brothers, Mark Sleet and wife Gladys of Connersville, John Sleet and wife Deborah of Upland, Calif., and Ernest Sleet and wife Kathryn of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; sisters, Evelyn Smith of Indianapolis, Marian Hunt of Hamilton, Ohio, Ellen Thompson and husband Tommy of Corpus Christi, Texas, Gloria Herd and husband Sam of Brooklyn, N.Y., and June Purvis of Los Angeles, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, David P. Sleet Jr.; brothers, Frank Sleet, Bruce Sleet, Dale Sleet and Frederick Sleet; sisters, Rosemary Sleet, Charity Sleet, Barbara Jean Sleet, Donna Churchman; special uncle and aunt, Ernest and Adgie Kiser; and his parents.

Services will be held at noon Saturday at Sherman Street Church of God, 1925 Sherman St., Anderson, with the Rev. Edward Foggs officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church.
