George Shiflett was a Texas Guard for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He died in a tragic accident while on duty, at age 47. He was guarding a squad of inmates at the Blue Ridge State Farm, 16 miles east of Richmond, on a ridge of Oyster Creek. He was mounted on horseback. A passing truck spooked his horse which bolted and threw him to the ground. His weapon discharged as he hit the ground, and struck him in the stomach. The truck struck the fleeing horse and killed it. It is reported that Officer Shiflett died at 9:45 A.M. At the time, he was survived by his wife, Nora Charlotta Wiggins, three sons, and six daughters. Later his wife was buried next to him.
