Willie Hayne "Cooney" Shiflett was born July 8, 1923 to George and Nola Shiflett in Weldon, Texas. Cooney attended CC camp at the age of 16 and served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked for Dow Chemical Company for a short time prior to beginning his life long career in the pipeline industry. He was inducted into the Pipeliner's Hall of Fame in 2007. Cooney was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Shriner's for 60 years.
Cooney married Betty Sue Monk on November 8, 1980. The couple retired to Brenham, Texas, in 1990.
Cooney went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 28, 2009. He was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers; four sisters; and daughter, Loy Ann Shiflett Zapalac. Survivors included: his wife; two sons; two daughters; 10 grandsons; 11 granddaughters; two sisters; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held Sunday, August 30th, in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral services were held Monday, August 31st, Brenham Memorial Chapel with Rev. Larry Embry officiating. Interment was in Prairie Lea Cemetery. Graveside Masonic Rites were conducted by Graham Lodge #20 A.F. & A.M.
