In 1887 Johann Frederick "Fred" and Julia Nusz immigrated to America on the SS Rhaetia. The steamer departed from Hamburg, Germany on April 18, 1887. Two other Nusz brothers and their families immigrated at the same time; Johann George and George Peter. Forty family members ranging from age 45 years to three months made the trip. Fred and Julia made their first home on a farm north of Canada, Kansas. The brothers stayed in Marion County a few years before moving to the Okene, Oklahoma area.

In later years Fred changed the spelling of his last name to Nuss but the other brothers kept the original spelling.

Fred and Julia had twelve children. Fred was a farmer.
