Virginia Ann Meier, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton J. Meier (nee Shields), passed away Saturday afternoon, Sept. 24, at 2:10 after an illness of pneumonia which extended over a period of only three days. Tuesday, she still attended school, being a Sophomore of Waterloo High School. On Wednesday, she contracted a cold which late that night developed into pneumonia, rapidly going into the critical stage.
All medical skill, constant attention and tender nursing proved for naught, and those who loved her had to say amen to the will of Him who doeth all things well. The news of her death cast a shadow over the entire community and every heart was touched with sympathy for the stricken ones.
Virginia was of a kind disposition, readily winning a warm place in the hearts of all those she met as she always had a smile of welcome and a kind word for all. She was beloved by her teachers and playmates, as was exemplified by the many anxious queries during her brief illness. The pride of her parents and brothers, and the only daughter and sister, her death leaves an aching wound in their hearts which will take many years to heal. Always obedient and friendly, she was worshipped as a dutiful child.
She was born June 28, 1923 in this city where she spent all of her life and passed away at the tender age of 15 years, 2 months and 26 days. She leaves to mourn her untimely death, her grief-stricken parents and four brothers: Raymond, Sylvester, Vincent and Cletus; her grandmother, Mrs. Henry Meier, in the family circle; also, a score of relatives and hundreds of friends who sympathize deeply with those bereft in their hour of deepest sorrow.
The funeral took place Tuesday morning from the family residence to SS. Peter and Paul’s Church, where a requiem high mass was chanted by Rev. Unterkoefler, which was followed by interment in the Catholic cemetery. The pallbearers were some of her most intimate girl friends; Dorothy Reinhold, Helen Schmidt, Geneva Reinhold, LaVon Mendel, Genevieve Jaeger and Mary All Lorenz. The privilege to attend the services was extended to all teachers and pupils of the high school and many accepted this.
