Mrs. Julia E. Jeffers, 94, of Barnesville, died Friday, July 9, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Mark P. Jeffers.

Born Nov. 9, 1898, in Keyser, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late William and Alice Crist.

Mrs. Jeffers was employed by the National Institutes of Health in the Department of Finance, retiring at the age of 70 in 1973. She was a World War II Gold Star Mother. She served as Town Clerk of Barnesville for 40 years (1953-1993) and was widely recognized as the oldest public servant in the country. She was a member of the Maryland Municipal League, American Legion and Comus Homemakers Club. She had received awards for outstanding service from the Maryland Municipal Clerks Association, the town of Barnesville and was honored at a luncheon at the Maryland Governor's House.

Surviving are three sons, Donald Jeffers of Boyds, Paul Jeffers of Frederick and Mark Jeffers of Monrovia; two daughters, Jean J. Voytko of Virginia and Helen J. Lewis of North Carolina; 26 grandchildren; and 33 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Benton and Richard; and two brothers, Lester and Paul Crist.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, July 10, and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, Barnesville. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, July 12, at the funeral home. The Rev. Jeddie DeFries, pastor of the Barnesville Baptist Church, and the Rev. George Reid, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, will officiate. Bearers are David Jeffers, Danny Jeffers, Michael Cunningham, Tommy Jeffers, John Sellers and Tom Young. Interment will be in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Barnesville Baptist Church, Barnesville Road, Barnesville, Md. 20838; or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, Bethesda, Md. 20814.
