Tonquish was a minor chief of the Potawatomi who lived in western Wayne County. He was killed by Major Macomb following an Indian raid on a local resident for food. Chief Tonquish's son was accused of killing the resident and was fleeing the area when an armed posse started after him and his party. Both Chief Tonquish and his son were killed trying to escape.
The Chief and his son were buried near where they died and a small wooden hut was placed over the graves for protection. Some time around 1837 or 1838 some boys opened the graves and removed from it Tonquish's gun and personal ornaments. All traces of the graves were eventually erased.
