Elizabeth 'Betty' Beardsley was the oldest daughter of John and Delia 'Ceby' (Thompson) Beardsley, born in Warrick co. Indiana. She had two older brothers James M and Francis M, one younger sister Eliza M and a younger brother Samuel W. When she was 4 years old her mother died. Approximately 5 months later her father marries Malinda Johnson who raises Betty and her siblings plus adds five brothers to the household!
On 24 December 1871 she marries James Andrew Medcalf in Warrick county Indiana. A daughter Mary Rodella 'Della' is born in 1876 and a son in 1877. The 1880 census shows the young family living and working on a farm in Spencer county Indiana. In 1887 a third child is born, a daughter, named Laretta Eliza 'Etta'. They continue to reside in Spencer county.
In 1919 Betty's husband James dies. She continues to live in Dale, Spencer county Indiana but moves in with her daughter Della and her husband Tom until her death in May 1940
