"After hearing about the gold in California and what productive farm land that was there, William was overcome by the lure to see what this land had to offer. He set out with one of the wagon trains in 1850, promising to send for the family the next year. Being good to his promise, his letter arrived with instructions for the family to join him in California.
"The experiences of Polly and the children going from Illinois to Oregon are depicted in a family chronicle "The Lure of Gold" as told by Elizabeth Jane (Elston) Burt to Lou McClain. (Tales of the Paradise Ridge, Vol. 29, June 1, 1988). Polly and the girls ended up in Oregon via the Oregon Trail. It was from the Eugene area that William gathered up the family and brought them to Pentz in Butte County, CA.
"During their stay in Oregon, Mary (Jane's half sister) met Frederick Bowden, whom she married. Mary stayed in Oregon when Polly and Elizabeth Jane (hence forth shall be referred to as Jane) moved to California. The bowdens had two daughters while they were living in Oregon. Later they also followed the family to Butte County, CA.....Source: "Genealogical Goldmine" Vol 39, 2006, published by The Paradise Genealogical Society, Paradise, CA"
