JOHN BURNETT, moved from Buncombe Co.NC. to Grainger CO.Tenn. abt 1835. He was a Methodist Circuit Rider Preacher, and farmer. It was near the end of the Civil War when John Burnett and a Mr. Warner and John's son Fred were walking on a trail and heard some men approaching. Young Fred hid in the bushes as he was frightened. The men bushwacked John Burnett and Mr. Warner, killing them both. After they left, young Fred buried his father under a tree. Young Fred Burnett left for help to complete the buial. When he returned with help, he couldn't find the body of his father John Burnett.
