Titus (who was known as "Winbourne") resided in Davidson County where he enlisted as Private in Company B, 48th North Carolina infantry at the age of 25 on August 8, 1862, for the war. He was wounded and captured at or near Sharpsburg, Maryland on or about September 17, 1862. He was confined at Fort Delaware yankee prison, Delaware. He was paroled and transferred to Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia on October 2, 1862. He was declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing on November 10, 1862. He returned to duty prior to December 13, 1862, when he was wounded in the shoulder at Fredericksburg, Virginia. He returned to duty in March-April 1864 and was again wounded in the right thigh at Ream's Station, Virginia on August 25, 1864. He was hospitalized in Richmond, Virginia and was furloughed for 60 days on December 31, 1864.

Malinda Christine Campbell was Winbourne's first wife who died at the age of 28 in 1875, just weeks after their daughter Hattie E. Johnson was born. Hattie was born 20 May 1875 and died in infancy 10 July 1875, less than 2 weeks after her mother's death. Winbourne later married Amanda (Manda) Nance (1851-1927) in 1876. Between the two marriages, he had 10 or 11 children. SOURCE: Curt Richey. However, I discovered another son William Dockery Poole (FamilySearch, Find-A-Grave, Ancestry) who was born in 1879 from a relationship between Winbourne and a woman named Ocia Pool. They were unmarried. This was discovered via correspondence with a great grandaughter of William Dockery Poole, who is also a DNA match on Ancestry DNA, and like James "Jamie" Johnson, a great-great grandchild of T. Winbourne Johnson. She shared that Ocia Pool died around age 25 (according to different sources) when William Dockery Poole was 7 years old. Ocia's parents were both deceased when she died. William was left an orphan and went to live with a Pritchard family in North Asheboro.

T. Winbourne Johnson's widow Amanda applied for pension in 1926 for his service in the Civil War.
