Thomas was born in Randolph County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Company C (Sampson Farmers), 38th North Carolina in Randolph County at the age of 21 on November 4, 1861. He mustered in as Corporal and was reduced to ranks on April 18, 1862. He was present or accounted for until he was captured at or near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 2-5, 1863. He was confined at Fort Delaware yankee prison, Delaware and was transferred to Point Lookout yankee prison, Maryland on October 15-18, 1863. He was paroled at Point Lookout on February 18, 1865. He was received at Boulware's and Cox's Wharfs, James River, Virginia on February 20-21, 1865, for exchange.
