A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Harrisburg August 2, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 13 as a private with Co. G, 56th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged by general order May 31, 1865, reason for the early discharge as yet unknown.
He married Sarah Ellen Lau February 6, 1866, and fathered Jacob Clayton (b. 09/06/67), Peter Samuel (b. 08/26/69), John Henry (b. 02/25/71), William Allen Meharque [?] (b. 11/29/72), Philip Eli (b. 10/19/74), Catharine Amelia (b. 10/07/76), Elizabeth Minnie May (b. 09/17/79), Rebecca Myrtle (b. 03/24/82), and Rosella Thresa (b. 02/13/88 - married William Samuel Beatty). Shortly after his marriage, he moved to York County where in 1870, he was living in Monaghan Township, in 1880 in Warrington Township, and by 1890 in Carroll Township where he died at his daughter's home from "paralysis" with "chronic Bright's disease" a contributing factor. Although initially a member of Mechanicsburg's Zinn Post No. 415, G.A.R., at the time of his death he was commander of Dillsburg's Jenkins Post No. 57.
