St. Ansgar Man Dies of Gunshot Injury

LeRoy Kittleson, 22, St. Ansgar, died in a local hospital at 4:25 a.m., Monday of injuries suffered in a hunting accident Sunday afternoon.

Kittleson was rushed to Mason City shortly after the accident Sunday and was never given much chance to recover. He was given constant blood transfusions and was in surgery for more than 2 hours.

He was apparently alone when the incident occurred. He had left the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Kittleson, intending to walk through a cornfield with his shotgun. He staggered back to the home a short time later and collapsed with the contents of a shotgun

Last Rites Held For LeRoy Kittleson Thrusday, October 28

Funeral services were conducted for LeRoy Kittleson at the First Lutheran Church Thursday afternoon, with the Reverend O. A. Langehough in charge of the services. Interment was in the First Lutheran Cemetery.

LeRoy Emil Bennie Kittleson, son of Floyd and Caroline Feldt Kittleson, was born January 18, 1926 on a farm near St. Ansgar. On January 29, 1926 he was baptized by the Reverend M. E. Waldeland. After proper instruction, he was confirmed May 4, 1941, in the First Lutheran Church by the Reverend Olaf A. Langehough. He attended county grade school until the fourth year, and from that time on, received his education in the St. Ansgar public school, graduating from high school in the class of 1945.

After graduation he remained at home, helping with the farm work, until his induction into the armed services at Fort Snelling, Minnesota on February 8, 1946. He served in Troop C of the 5th Cavalry as Private First Class, with nine months of service overseas in Japan. He received his honorable discharge at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. April 2, 1947, after which he again made farming his chosen occupation, living at his home in St. Ansgar.

LeRoy loved sports, participating in Basketball, football, and baseball while attending high school and while serving with the army in Japan, he was a member of his regiment's football team. He enjoyed hunting and it was while engaged in this pastime he met with the accident which later proved to be fatal. No one will ever know the circumstances by which the gun he was carrying accidentally discharged as he was walking though the cornfield just north of his home. He was hunting alone and managed to walk home where he collapsed - demonstrating his great determination, courage, and strength.

He was rushed by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Mason City where everything humanly possible was done to save his life but the burden was too much for him to bear. He was conscious to the very end, receiving Holy Communion and understanding the prayers offered for him. He died Tuesday morning at 4:20 A. M. with a firm belief in God and everlasting life, which is a great comfort to his family and many friends. Only last Sunday morning he was about his Lord's business, serving as an usher at the regular morning worship.

LeRoy is survived by his father and mother, five brothers, Galen, Marlin, Norman, Claire, and James, also four sisters, Marjorie, Carol, Virgene, and Charlotte, his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Charles Feldt, and one nephew, Bruce Kittleson. Many other relatives and friends also mourn his early passing.
