Rev. Humphrey Purinton was born in Bath, ME. om 1758. He was converted at seventeen, uniting with the Congregationalists at Harpswell. After a brief service in the war of the Revolution, about 1779, he settled in Bowdoin, then a wilderness. He was active in supporting divine worship, and preached some. It became evident that an Arminian element existed in the Baptist church. In the separation which occurred, Bro. Purinton and others united under the name of "Christian Band." Through his ministry large accessions occurred. When the Freewill Baptist movement reached Bowdoin, Purington, and his followers joined them. He was ordained in December, 1807. His labors were especially blessed as a revivalist. Finally, with mind bright and soul tranquil, he fell asleep in his 75th year, Jan. 28, 1832."
He was married to Thankful Snow, and they had a large family. Many of his descendants were ministers, deacons and workers in the Free Baptist Church, especially, the West Bowdoin Free Baptist, Bowdoin, ME, which history can be read online, telling of this family's contributions and labors.
