Lawrence Smith
Lawrence B. "Pete" Smith, 80, of Burlington, died at 7:38 p.m. Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Burlington Care Center.
Born April 22, 1920, in New London, he was the son of Clarence B. and Florence Willey Smith. On Jan. 7, 1942, he married Lena Heller in Kahoka, Mo.
Mr. Smith was a photographer for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and worked for the Atomic Energy Commission at IAAP for 40 years.
He was a 1939 graduate of New London High School and attended Burlington Junior College for one year. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. He was transferred to the Army and was stationed with Gen. George Patton in Germany. He was involved in the occupation of Germany and guarded the German prisoners of war.
He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, American Legion Post 52, where he was past commander, 40 & 8 Chef de' Gal, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Moose, Bees Baseball Association, Keenagers, was a charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post New London and was a member of the Burlington Drum and Bugle Corps for more than 25 years.
He was a licensed umpire in Iowa and Illinois and District Legion baseball chairman. He filmed football games for Notre Dame and Burlington high schools, Southeastern Community College basketball games, Burlington High School basketball and played Santa Claus for many years.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Cherlyn Jordan of Carthage, Ill., and Kathryn Marmion of West Burlington; two sons, Larry B. Smith of Milwaukee and Brian L. Smith of Montrose, Ill.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ethel Miller of Farmington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one nephew.
Visitation will begin after 8 a.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Smith will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel, with Al Orth and Jerry Wiemann officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
