Seth Darling's paternal lineage is as follows:
gr. grandparents: Dennis Darling and Hannah Francis
grandparents: Benjamin Darling and Mehitable White
parents: Thomas Darling and Rachel White

Seth was born in Mendon, Massachussettes. He was the son of Thomas Darling and Rachel (White Darling). He came from Puritan stock. When he was 12 years old, his father, Thomas died. (Thomas served in the Mendon militia at the start of the Revolutionary War and may have been an early casualty.) After the death of his father, Seth's mother was appointed guardian of her five minor sons: Simeon, Seth, John, Nathan and Alpheus.)
Seth enlisted in the Revolutionary War on July 14, 1780 when he was 16 and served as a private until October 10 of that same year in Capt. Benjamin Read's company, (Worcester County Militia) Col. Pond's regiment. This tour of duty was at West Point and the regiment was formed as reinforcement to the Continental Army.
After the war, Seth returned to living in Mendon. In May of 1875, when he was 21, intentions to marry Chloe Marsh Darling (daughter of Sgt. Joseph Marsh and Deborah Staples Marsh) were published. In Feb. of 1786, Seth sold his share of his father's estate to his brother, Simeon, and on Oct. 6 of that same year, at the age of 22, Seth married Chloe in Mendon.

Six years after their marriage, on April 16, 1792, Seth and Chloe moved to Windsor Co., Vermont and Seth bought almost ten acres of land in Hartland, Vermont, from Joseph Allen Jr. Then, on 30 January 30, 1794, he bought another tract of land in Hartland from his father-in-law, Joseph Marsh. This property was partly in Hartland and partly in Woodstock. Their first house was a log cabin in Hartland near the border with Woodstock. Their first four children were born here.

Seth and Chloe Darling's children were:
1) * Smith Darling, b. Dec. 2, 1787 in Hartland, Windsor, VT. and d. Oct. 8, 1871 in Somerset, Niagara Co., NY
2) * Prudence Darling, b. Nov. 13, 1789 in Hartland, Windsor, VT. and d. June 15, 1849 in Dayton, OH. She marr. Henry Phelps and second, Valentine Bennett.
3) Chloe Darling, b. Oct. 29, 1791 in Hartland, Windsor, VT. and d. Aug. 17, 1877 in Toledo, Lucas Co., OH. She marr. Fullam/Fulham Perry.
4) * Seth Darling, b. Apr. 29, 1794 in Hartland, Windsor, VT. and d. Oct. 13, 1813 in Woodstock, Windsor, VT.
5) * Jason Darling, b. Apr. 19, 1796 in Woodstock, Windsor, VT. and d. Feb. 7, 1864 in Woodstock, Windsor, VT.
6) Horace Darling, b. Apr. 8, 1799 in Woodstock, Windsor, VT. and d. Sep. 1, 1824 at the age of 25 in Cincinnati, Hamilton county, OH.
7) * George W. Darling, b. Sep. 8, 1801 in Woodstock, Windsor, VT. and d. 1848
On Apr. 13, 1828, in Hartland, Niagara, NY, George Darling married 1st, Nancy Russell, daughter of John & Anna (Gilbert) Russell. Nancy was b. June 24, 1809 in Liberty, NY and d. July 6, 1832 in Hartland, Niagara, NY.
8) * Lewis Darling Sr., b. Mar. 5, 1804 (or Dec. 10, 1801) in Woodstock, Windsor, VT. and d. 1882. He marr. 1) Nancy Russell and 2) Freelove Kittredge.
9) Jefferson Darling, b. 1806
10) * James Madison Darling, b. Jun. 19, 1808 in Woodstock, Windsor, VT. and d. Dec. 17, 1832
11) * Nelson Marsh Darling, b. Mar. 13, 1811 in Woodstock, Windsor, VT. and d. 1874
12) * Charles Darling, b. Sep. 5, 1813 in Woodstock, Windsor, VT. and d. Sep. 23, 1872.

About 1795, Seth built a new house on the Woodstock side of the property, which, according to Carlos P. Darling, was still standing in 1923. They lived there the rest of their lives and the rest of their children were born in the Woodstock house.

Seth was a farmer. His religion was Universalist (evolved from Puritanism). On 17 April 1820, Jason Darling signed a contract with his father, Seth, agreeing to take care of his parents for the rest of their lives and his three younger brothers for as long as they lived with him. If he complied, at the death of his parents, the farm would be his.

Seth Darling died very suddenly on his farm Sunday morning, March 27, 1825, in Woodstock, Windsor Co., Vermont, 6 days after his 61st birthday. Retiring to rest at night, apparently in good health, in the morning he was found dead in his bed, having passed away so quietly, not even his wife was awakened, who was sleeping by his side."
