Mrs. Mary A. Spurlin, aged 68, died Thursday, July 2, at her home near Nevis, following an illness of about eighteen months.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 6, at the Church of Christ in Nevis, Rev. F.L. Fradenburgh officiating. Burial was made in the Nevis cemetery.
Mary A. Peirce was born August 26, 1873. She grew to womanhood and pioneered with her parents in Iowa and Nebraska. The family was large and experienced many hardships and reverses, as well as joy and freedom. All became happy memories in later life.
While a young lady, Mary was united in marriage to Charles Elphick. Two children, a son, Clayton and daughter Bernice were born to the union.
Later Mrs. Elphick and children came to Minnesota and July 16, 1909, she was married to Clarence A. Spurlin. The couple settled on a farm in Thorpe township, this county where they lived happily until death claimed Mr. Spurlin on August 14, 1938. Two sons, Joe and Guy were born to the union.
Mrs. Spurlin continued to live at the old home with her two sons and later with their families.
She was a devoted wife and mother and a splendid neighbor, and home was the dearest place to her. In late years she became converted and lived a consecrated Christian life.
Mrs. Spurlin is survived by three sons, Clayton Elphick of Portland, Oregon; Joe Spurlin of Solway and Guy Spurlin of Nevis and a daughter, Mrs. H. H. Hamblet (Bernice) of Portland, Oregon. She also leaves three brothers, Pearl C. Pierce, Conroe, Texas; Jesse Pierce, Sequin, Wash.; Thomas Pierce, Seattle, Wash. and five sisters, Mrs. Anna Morris, Dunlap, Iowa; Mrs. A.P. Mathisen, Royal, Iowa; Mrs. R. R. Wilson, Des Moines, Iowa, and Mrs. Ruby Stoner and Mrs. D. S. Borland, Peterson, Iowa, also other relatives. The many neighbors and friends extend to the sorrowing family their deepest sympathy.
