James Bushnell was born in Lisbon, IL on August 2, 1847. He was the son of George and Nancy (Clark) Bushnell. On May 8, 1875 he married Elizabeth Victoria Burgess, they had six daughters: Nellie, Mae, Etta, Irene, Ruby and Sylvia. He and Elizabeth had a farm for many years in Lisbon, IL. Sometime between 1900 and 1906 they retired and bought 40 acres of land in Watervliet, MI. They also bought a house in town at 316 W. Pleasant Street. In September of 1905 James and Elizabeth purchased the Grocery Stock and Meat Market in Watervliet and in August of 1906 sold the grocery store, planning to move back to Aurora. In 1912 they were living at 322 Grand Avenue in Aurora. On James and Elizabeth's 38th Wedding Anniversary, May 8, 1913 their daughters surprised them with a wonderful party, however due to the illness of Elizabeth, the afternoon was spent quietly with an informal family gathering.
