JAMES C. BROWN

James C. Brown, well known resident of this vicinity, died at his home north of Chariton on Tuesday, July 8, 1941, at the age of 72 years, 1 month and 5 days. On Jan. 28, 1940, he was stricken with paralysis and had since been confined to his bed.

James C. Brown, youngest child of James H. and Elvira Brown, was born in Lucas county, Iowa, on June 3, 1869, and spent most of his life on the farm where he was born, later moving to the home near Chariton.

On Dec. 9, 1891, he was married to Irene McDowell, who preceded him in death on March 1, 1936. To this union one child was born, a son, Ralph Brown, of Chariton.

During his long residence in this community Mr. Brown, or Jim as he was better known, had won the esteem and respect of all with whom he came in contact.

He was a charter member and treasurer of the Farm Bureau until the time of his illness, also he had been a member of the board of trustees of the Lucas County Telephone Company for 22 years.

He was a splendid neighbor, a kind devoted husband and father, a good citizen. He has been tenderly cared for by his kind and loving daughter-in-law, Fern, and his son Ralph. Everything was done that was possible and he bore his suffering with patience. To know him was to love him.

He leaves to mourn their loss, his son Ralph and wife; a granddaughter, Mrs. Ward Macaulay and husband, of Des Moines; two great grandchildren, Jimmy and Judy; one brother, Thomas N. Brown, of Chariton; and one sister, Mrs. Wesley Moore, of near Williamson. Three sisters and three brothers have preceded him in death.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Donald McKay, of the Christian church, were held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at the Beardsley funeral home, and burial was in the Oxford cemetery.

Husband of Irene Belle McDowell. Son of James Henry Brown and Elvira Foster.
