THOMAS NELSON BROWN
Thomas Nelson Brown, well known resident of this vicinity, died at the General Nursing Home, on Wednesday, July 8, 1942, at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 6 days. He had been in failing health for eight months.
Thomas Nelson Brown, son of James and Elvira Brown, was born in Fulton county, Illinois, on Dec. 2, 1856. When but a lad of nine years he came with his parents by the covered wagon route to Lucas county, Iowa, which place has since been his home.
On Jan. 30, 1878, he was united in marriage to Mary Catherine Shockley, who preceded him in death on July 4, 1933.
To this union 12 children were born, five of whom have preceded him in death. Mrs. Maude Holmes, Otis, Raymond, Thomas and an infant son.
Those living are four sons, James, Oran and Arthur Brown, of Chariton; Charles Brown of Woodland, California; three daughters, Mrs. Chas. May, Mrs. Oma Schwartz and Mrs. Grace Brown, of Chariton; also a granddaughter, Velma Brown, was reared in the home of her grandparents.
He united with the Oxford Methodist Episcopal church in young manhood, and always gave evidence of a beautiful Christian life. He bore his suffering with patience and was always thoughtful of those who cared for him.
He leaves to mourn their loss, seven children, 23 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Wesley Moore, of near Chariton, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. A. E. Beals, of Russell, were held at 2:30 Friday afternoon at the Beardsley funeral home, and buial was in the Oxford cemetery.
