Rev Raymond J Christ OSFS

A native of Philadelphia PA, Raymond graduated from Northeast Catholic High School in 1941 and entered the seminary of the Oblates. He continued his studies, earning a graduate degree in mathematics from Catholic University of America in Washington DC. He was ordained a priest in Wilmington DE, by Bishop Edmond FitzMaurice in 1951.

Fr Christ spent more than 25 years as chaplain to two different communities of monastic women, the Visitation Sisters of Holy Mary in Kent, England (1963-75), and the Benedictine Sisters in Ridgley MD (1975-88). Immediately preceding his retirement, he ministered for ten years as pastor of St Richard's Catholic Church in Manheim PA.

"Fr Christ's commitment to religious life was evident by his dedication to our sisters in the Church," said Rev James J Greenfield OSFS, provincial of the Oblates. "Fr Christ was known for his commitment to our community and appreciation for the spirit of St Francis de Sales," Fr Greenfield said. He had been retired and living at the Oblates' home, Villa de Sales in Wyndmoor PA, while working at Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic Church in Plymouth Meeting.

Rev Raymond J Christ, age 86, died Wednesday, August 5, 2009, of heart failure at Union Hospital in Elkton MD.

In addition to his confreres in the Oblates of St Francis de Sales, Fr Christ is survived by his brother, Edward, and sister-in-law, Anne; and many nieces and nephews. He is the son of the late Edward and Sophia Helrigel.

Visitation and a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, August 10, 2009, at Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church, Plymouth Meeting PA. Interment followed at the Oblates' Cemetery at the deSales Centre in Childs MD.
