OBLATES OF ST FRANCIS de SALES
RETREAT CENTER, RETIREMENT CENTER & CEMETERY
Oblates first arrived in the United States in 1893. The American Province founded its novitiate in Wilmington DE, on Sept 23, 1903, and transferred it to Childs MD in 1907 with a scholasticate attached. The Oblates in Wilmington conducted a Salesianum School for Young Men and were chaplains of several religious communities, the Cecil County Almshouse, the Delaware State
Psychiatric Hospital, the Ferris Industrial School for Boys.
Later in the twentieth century, the novitiate was moved again and the property was utilized as a retreat center and retirement home for the aging community of Oblate Fathers and Brothers. The cemetery is for Oblate Priests, Brothers, and Novices only. The grounds are beautifully maintained and very peaceful.
