SERVICES FOR LELAND F. AHERN HELD
Leland F. Ahern, 70, an early resident of Lucas County moving to Des Moines in 1928, died last Tuesday evening at his home near Altoona. He died as the result of a heart attack while fighting a grass fire at his Altoona acreage.
At the age of 22 he became a Polk County welfare worker. Ten years later he was named assistant Polk County Welfare Director. In 1947 he was appointed Director of Welfare, serving 23 years, retiring in 1970.
He was well known throughout the midwest for his work with the deaf. He founded Friends of the Deaf, an Iowa organization devoted to promoting the interest of deaf people everywhere. He became nationally known as founder of Valium Anonymous, an nationwide organization that has become very active in helping people addicted to valium.
Survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth Ahern of Altoona and Edith Matthews of Des Moines; and two brothers, James and Dale of Des Moines.
Graveside funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Grimes Cemetery with the Rev. Father Frank Chiodo conducting.
