PLATTSBURGH — Mr. James L.M. Harrigan, 84, of Kennedy Avenue in Plattsburgh, passed away Friday, May 8, 2009, at CVPH Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born in Boston, Mass., April 15, 1925, son of the late Thomas F. and Elizabeth (Griffith) Harrigan.
James was a graduate of Scituate High School and attended Fitchburg State Teacher's College. He entered the U.S Border Patrol in 1951, stationed in McAllen, Texas. James was transferred to Chateaugay in 1955 as Border Patrol Agent. He then entered U.S. Immigration Service as an inspector in 1955 and worked at JFK Airport in 1962 and later transferred to Logan Airport in 1969 as a supervisor. James became Port Director in Champlain, N.Y., in 1972, retiring from that position in 1984. While a Port Director in Champlain, he was appointed as the Director for Immigration for the Olympic XIII Winter Games in 1980. After retiring, James became an immigration consultant from 1984 to 1991.
James was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He served in three theaters during the war, achieving the rank of chief. James was a member of American Legion Post 88 in Marshfield, Mass., Plattsburgh Elks Lodge 621 and was an avid golfer, traveler and reader.
Mr. Harrigan is survived by his wife of 36 years, Brenda (Roberts) Harrigan of Plattsburgh; eight children, Kirk Harrigan and his wife Joan of Tucson, Ariz., Adeline Besselieu and her husband Chuck of St. Petersburg, Fla., Thomas Harrigan of Port Kent, Larry Harrigan and his wife Teena of Virginia, Kevin Harrigan and his wife Carla of Kentucky, Maureen Harrigan of Saratoga, Laura LaValley and her husband, Jim, of Tupper Lake, Timothy Harrigan of Albany; 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a brother, John Harrigan and his wife Olga of Scituate, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
James was predeceased by his brothers, Thomas Harrigan, who was killed in action during World War II, Paul Harrigan; his sisters, Helen Giuliano and Frances Banks.
Funeral arrangements will be private, at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Scituate, Mass.
