Ismael attended John Hyson Elementary School and Menaul School. He was a World War II Army Air Force veteran, state auditor, a private pilot, 1st postmaster in Los Alamos, a general contractor, and businessman.

On 21 July 2002, a Rosary was held at Block-Salazar Mortuary. On 22 July 2002, funeral services were at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada. Burial of cremains followed in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
