Aunt Ludie Ledford, 81, to be honored on birthday Thursday
Pleasant Grove - This community is honoring one of its oldest and beloved citizens, Mrs. Plunk Ledford, who celebrates Thursday her 81st birthday. Last week the Woman's Missionary Society of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church called on Mrs. Ledford, sang a number of songs and heard Rev. A. M. Kiser, pastor, speak in praise of the life of the well-known octagenarian. A life-long resident of this community, she is a daughter of the late John Turner William Alexander Forsyth Gladden (known as Turner Gladden) and Mary Ann Grigg, and her grandfather, the late John L. Gladden, was prominent as a public school and singing school teacher and justice of the peace for many years. Mrs. Ledford, whose name is Lucreta Christina, was married to David Plunk Ledford January 7, 1875 by Squire George Blanton at the bride's home, where Gaston Hoyle now lives. She joined the church and was baptized in the same year and is now a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist church. To this union was born one son Odus, with whom Mrs. Ledford makes her home. She has nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1925, they having lived together to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.
One greatly enjoys hearing her tell of the days of her early married life when she cooked by a huge open fireplace, using iron oven and skillets, unknown to the younger generation. She also enjoys telling of spinning on her old spinning-wheel and making all of their clothes. Eight pairs of men's trousers are the last things she made, she distinctly remembers. Until recently, she still had four spinning wheels, three reels and a loom, which have won several prizes at the Cleveland county fair. A fact of which she is very proud is that she had three quilts pieced and two of them quilted at thirteen years of age. An old letter written by a friend of her father and the family during the War Between the States telling of the death of her father, who was killed in action at the battle of Gettysburg, Va., July 1, 1863, is one of her most treasured possessions, because of the touching things related about her father.
Reading is one of her favorite pastimes and besides reading newspapers, she has read the New Testament through twice, besides reading other portions of the Bible at intervals. Movies are the only things she has heard about, as she has never been in one or to a circus either, but she has seen several parades and has spent one dime to see a side show. She has been to the fair several times. The longest trip she has ever taken was to Blacksburg, S. C. to visit her brother many years ago.
