Mr. Benjamin H. "Ben" Swint, 91, of Charleston passed away July 22, 2009, in Hubbard Hospice House.
Mr. Swint retired from the C&P Telephone Company with 39 years of service. He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the Army's First Armored Division in Africa and Italy. He was active in Serra International, having served as president and district governor, and was a founding member of the Charleston club. Mr. Swint was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, where he served in the church choir, as lector, and on the Parish Council. He was an Eagle Scout and served as a Boy Scout leader for many years. Mr. Swint attended Mount St. Mary's College, Emmetsburg, Md., and received a B.A. degree from St. Mary's University, Baltimore, Md.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eliza Swint, one brother and four sisters.

He is survived by his children, Eliza and husband, Tim McCartney, of Toledo, Ohio, Christine and husband, William Grizzell, of Charleston, Susan and husband, Rick Bowles, of Winfield, Nancy and husband, Gary Emerson, of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Catherine and husband, Jack Jackson, of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren Mike McCartney, Brian McCartney and wife, Sarah, Elizabeth Grizzell Bishop and husband, Tim, Robert Grizzell and fiancée, Christina Johnstone, Matthew Bowles, Carrie Bowles Guggenbiller and her husband, Matthew, Michelle Emerson Marlar and husband, Kevin, Mark Emerson and Tierre Boose, and Anna Jackson; and great-grandchildren, Skylar and Jadan Bishop and Maya Grace Emerson. He is also survived by his sister, Marcy Beckleheimer, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 27, at St. Agnes Catholic Church with Father John McDonough officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Harding Funeral Chapel, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
