Andrew Coyt Hartsell was the first of two children born to Samuel Joshua Hartsell (1860-1938) and his first wife Elizabeth C. Petrea (1859-1889). The other child was Emma Hartsell (1885-1898). After his mother's death, Andrew's father married Lula Jane DeArmon (1872-1933), and they had thirteen more children.

One Sunday morning in 1898, the Hartsell family went to church, leaving 12 year old Emma at home to care for a sick sibling. Two men broke into the house, brutally attacked, molested and killed poor Emma. This inspired a folk song with begins "In Eighteen Hundred and Ninety Eight, sweet Emma met with an awful fate...."
