Major Joseph Bruff of the 125th Ohio Volunteer Infantry wrote to his wife on August 4. 1864: "I was over at the Field Hospital yesterday. There is not many patients there but plenty of Doctors. A member of my old company had just died: George Shenefield. He was wounded a few days before, while on picket, through the upper part of the lungs and appeared to suffer considerable."
[The letter is part of the Karen Rafael Bruff collection and is being prepared for publication.]
***************
Jared and George Shenafield mustered into the 125th Ohio Infantry Regiment in August and October 1862 respectively. Jared was in Company A and George was in Company G. In late July 1864, the regiment was one of several under the command of William Tecumseh Sherman on his march through the south. George was wounded a few days before 3 August 1864, his date of death, while on picket duty. During this timeframe, the regiment fought at New Hope Church, Kennesaw Mountain, Big Shanty, and the siege of Atlanta. His brother Jared remained on active duty through the end of the war. He mustered out on 8 June 1865. Jared died on 18 June 1902, in Coldwater, Michigan.

Except for the date and place of death of Jared, the following reference data is provided:
1. Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1865, Vol. 8, pp. 422, 439, and 773.

Inscription

Name engraved on gravestone appears to be incorrect. Jared Shenefiel, or Shenefield, served as a private in Company A, but survived the war and was mustered out with his company. See Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1866, Vol. 8, p. 422. See the same reference, pp. 439 and 773, for confirming information on George.
