He was looking for his brother Lewis who was already living in California. His letter describes some of the hardships of the trip. On Oct 17th, he arrived at Hangtown where he saw "quite a number of my old acquaintances." None of his Iowa friends there knew of Lewis so he left stating it was very dull times there with 19 minors out of 20 doing nothing and in debt for their board. He continued to Sac City, no luck, to Stockton, still no Lewis so he continued towards Sonora. Found employment 18 miles short of Sonoma so he stayed. 10 Days later, Lewis, who had traveled considerable, found him. That was the end of his letter.
