William and his twin, Edward, were born 26 March 1818 to Edward Gobin and Susanna Shoemaker. His twin died the following year.
***William was married three times, first, Elizabeth Baker, with whom he had 3 children,, Dilia, William and Lelia, Elizabeth died 1862.
***In 1867 he married, Silvia Olds Mitchell, who died in 1870.
***His third marriage in 1871 was to Anna Staffin.
William moved from Pennsylvania to Iowa City, Iowa at least by 1851. In the Iowa State Census for 1851 and 1852, William was living in Johnson County.
According to a letter written from William to his brother Charley, he left Iowa City May 10, 1852 and was in California when the letter was written on Nov 22, 1852. He was looking for his brother Lewis who was already living in California. His letter describes some of the hardships of the trip. On Oct 17th, he arrived at Hangtown where he saw "quite a number of my old acquaintances." None of his Iowa friends there knew of Lewis so he left stating it was very dull times there with 19 minors out of 20 doing nothing and in debt for their board. He continued to Sac City, no luck, to Stockton, still no Lewis so he continued towards Sonora. Found employment 18 miles short of Sonoma so he stayed. 10 Days later, Lewis, who had traveled considerable, found him. That was the end of his letter.
***In 1860 he was living in Buena Vista, Stanislaus, with wife Elizabeth, same place in 1870 with wife Sylvia and same place in 1880 with wife Ann(Staffin).
