On October 5, 1864, a major battle in the War Between the States was fought just east of downtown Cartersville Georgia. Of the 5,301 men engaged in the Battle of Allatoona Pass on October 5, 1864, there were 1,603 casualties. Cornelius DeWitt was one of the 706 lost on the Union side.
