The Vernal Second Ward chapel was crowded to capacity with friends and relatives on Friday to pay their last respects at the funeral rites for Lois Viola Massey Pope, 49, held at 1 p.m. Bishop John Hair, Jr. presided and conducted.
The death of Mrs. Pope occurred at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday os last week following a protracted illness. Mrs. Pope had been a teacher in the Uintah School district for the past 30 years.
The prelude, "Nearer My God, To Thee" was played bt Miss Virginia Olsen on the vibraharp. The casket and chancel were covered with a profuse display of floral offerings.
A special chorus consisting of Frank J. Kennard, Harold E. Davis, Arthur Manwaring, Mrs. Rose Walker, Mrs. Ida Sowards, Mrs. Harland Hogkinson, Mrs. Lucille Calder and Miss Olsen sang, "The Lord is My Shepherd," as the opening number and "Shall We Meet Beyond the River?" as the closing song. Mrs. Mary Manwaring was accompanist.
The Naples Ward male quartet consisting of Frank Goodrich, Orlo Goodrich, J. N. Lybbert and LaVell Manwaring, sang. "Thy Will Be Done." Mrs. A. M. Goodrich was accompanist Miss Olsen, rendered a vibraharp selection, "Silent Night."
The speakers were A. G. Goodrich, former member of the Board of Education who told of the work of Mrs. Pope as a teacher and of her method of inspiring students to live the better life and of her workas a teacher in the various organizations in the LDS church and of her staunch faith in the youth of Zion. President Hyrum B. Calder and Archie Johnson of the Uintah Stake, both of the splendid achievements in school, church and family and of her untiring efforts to make life more beautiful.
The invocation was offered by Robert Aycock and the benediction pronounced by Arza G. Adams.
Pallbearers were six of her brother: George O. Massey, Arthur Massey, Lewis Van Massey, John Sewell and Everett Massey. Mrs. Pope was the first of thirteen grown living children of Mrs. John D. Massey to pass from this life; two others died in infancy.
Interment was made in the Vernal Memorial Park and the grave was dedicated by E. J. Longhurst.
