Wait was born in Rensselaer, New York. During the spring of 1859, he emigrated to Sangamon County from Virginia where his family settled when he was eleven. During the fall of 1859 he went to Macon County, where he stayed for just two weeks, finally settling in Logan County. He stayed in Logan County until the Civil War broke out, when he chose to enlist in Company H, 106th Illinois infantry. He served until the end of war and was in the siege of Vicksburg. When he returned to Illinois, he settled in Sangamon County where he stayed until 1872. During his time in Sangamon County, he married Susan A. Welch on June 2, 1868. He finally chose to settle in Macon County and at the time of his death owned over 320 Acres of land in Macon County. The first vote he cast was for Abraham Lincoln, and he was a member of Dunham Post 141, which was out of Decatur. Wait died at his home, which was southwest of Mt. Zion, Illinois
