Obituary, The Daily Ledger, July 2, 1908

James G. Chappell, aged 73 years, died yesterday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. S.H. Phenicle, 115 East Thirty-fourth street, following an illness of several months with dropsy. Mr. Chappell was a native of New York and came to Tacoma seventeen years ago, engaging in the merchandise and commission business of South Eleventh street. He retired a few years ago, owing to advanced years and failing health. His wife died about five years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Phenicle and Mrs. W.A. Barnes, also three sons, Charles S., Dana E. and Elmer F. Chappell. Mr. Chappell was a man of strict integrity in his business dealings and had a pleasant manner which made him friends with all who fell within the circle of his acquaintance. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2:30 from Hoska's chapel. The interment will be at Tacoma cemetery. The funeral will be private.
