Town and Vital Records 1794 - 1892, written by "Farmington Maine town clerk," list the children of Reuben and Jane Butterfield as: Joseph, born 30 September 179(?), Olive, born 25 December 1795; Asa, born 1 November 1797; Sally, born 3 April 1799; Hannah, born 7 March 1806; and Jane W., born 15 October 1811. All children have a listed birthplace therein, of Farmington, Maine.

Joseph Butterfield was a farmer. He was a widower when he passed away. Cause of death was "catarrh," per his Mortality Schedule listing.

Named in the will of the Joseph Butterfield who died 8 August 1879 in Franklin county, Maine, were: a brother, Asa Butterfield; a sister, Hannah Butterfield, wife of Caleb Butterfield; a sister, Jane W. Butterfield; a sister, Sally, widow of Daniel Eames. Said will was dated 15 December 1877.
