Reuben Butterfield was born in * 1765. He died 1 December 1857. He was 92.

He was buried 1857 at Butterfield cemetery in Farmington, Franklin, Maine.

Maine, Veterans' Cemetery Records 1676 - 1918 has the following:

Reuben Butterfield was born in January 1765 and died 1 December 1857.

The New Hampshire Marriage Records Index 1637 - 1947 has the following:

Reuben Butterfield and Jane Whitney married 13 February 1794 at Dunstable, Hillsborough, New Hampshire.

Massachusetts Compiled Marriages 1633 - 1850 had the following:

"Reubin" Butterfield and Jane Whitney married 13 February 1794 in Dunstable, Middlesex county, Massachusetts.

* This date was based upon their extrapolated date using his general age. "The History of Farmington, Franklin County, Maine" by Francis Gould Butler gives a birthdate: 29 December 1764 (in the list of children under his father's biography.)

Reuben Butterfield first came into the township when a lad, in company with his uncle, Samuel Butterfield. He remained here some years, and then returned to Dunstable. He enlisted in Massachusetts for the suppression of Shay's Rebellion in 1786, and subsequently, returned to Sandy River.

He first took up back lot No. 7, east side, which he afterwards sold, and bought of Joseph Riant, river lot No. 39. Having made an arrangement to care for his parents during their declining years, he moved onto his father's farm, where he lived and died.

Mr. Butterfield was twice married: February 13, 1792, to Jane Whitney, who was born in Dunstable, March 11, 1767, died September 20, 1819; married (2) December 29, 1823 (pub.) Elizabeth Hardy.

He died December 1, 1857.

Seven children by first marriage --

1. Joseph, born September 30, 1794; married May 12, 1824, Sarah Sawtelle; died July 3, 1877. He lived as a farmer in Farmington; highly respected for his upright character; s. p.

2. Olive, born December 23, 1795.

3. Asa, born November 1, 1797.

4. Sarah, born April 3, 1799; married, April 10, 1823, Daniel, son of Samuel Eames, q. v.

5. Hannah, born March 7, 1805; married, April 28, 1830, Caleb Butterfield, q. v.

6. Jane Whitney, born October 11, 1815; unmarried.
