He graduated from Washington College of Pennsylvania and Princeton Theological Seminary. He was ordained in November 1947 and worked in Ellicott Mills, Maryland; Wilmington, NC; Gloucester City, NJ; and Ridley Park, PA, where he spent the last ten years of his ministry until 1884. In 1892 the retired Presbyterian clergyman and former editor of The Presbyterian religious paper made his home in West Philadelphia just a few doors from where famous artist Cecilia Beaux and her family lived. The artist had requested the eminent minister to sit for her, and she portrayed him in the tricornered Chippendale chair that she used for many of her portraits for that period. Within a year the painting became a prize-winning portrait.
