He was the son of Colonel Joseph and Ann Grier, and his family moved from Bucks County to Forks of the Brandywine when he was very young. He graduated Dickinson College, Carlisle, Penn., in 1809 and studied theology at the Theological School of the Rev. Dr. J. M. Mason of New York and also at the Theological Seminary at Princeton, N. J. Due to ill health, he was delayed in his preparations for the ministry but was finally licensed to preach by the Presbytery of New Castle, October 1, 1818. Mr. Grier taught a classical school for a few years, but having received a commission as Chaplain in the United States Navy, he was ordained by the Presbytery of Philadelphia in 1826. In 1859 he resigned his commission and passed the remainder of his days with his children's families.Name: John W. Grier
