LONG RECORD OF MEMBERSHIP OF MRS. W. H. POOL

The Methodist Sunday school recently undertook to ascertain who was the oldest member of the local Methodist church in point of continuous membership. The result of the enquiry showed that this honor went to Mrs. Fannie Pool, widow of the late Dr. W. H. Pool. She joined the church when twelve years of age and she is now 78, making 66 years of unbroken membership. She became a member when the frame building then occupied by the Methodists stood on the site of the present city cemetery. In appreciation of Mrs. Pool and her unusual record the Philathea class presented her with flowers and a note conveying the sentiment of the school.

The oldest member of the Roanoke First Methodist church, and probably the oldest resident of Roanoke, though not the oldest person here, passed to her final reward at six o'clock last Friday morning when Mrs. Fannie Pool laid down her earthly burdens. She had reached the age of 85 years and four months, lacking a few days.
Mrs. Pool was born in Mississippi and came as a small child with her parents, the late Dr. and Mrs. W. E. White, to this place, where she has resided ever since. She was the oldest daughter and next to the eldest child in a family of five daughters and four sons. All are now deceased except Mrs. Emma Carroll and Mrs. J. C. Hornsby, of this city.
The good woman now mourned by many was the widow of the late Dr. W. H. Pool, former prominent citizen of Roanoke, who died 21 years ago. She is survived by three sons, Messrs. W. A., W. H. and J. T. Pool, a number of grandchildren and many relatives and friends. An only daughter, Mrs. G. P. McMurray, died a few years ago.
Mrs. Pool joined the Methodist church in Roanoke about 73 years ago. She was possessed of many strong traits of character and had the respect and admiration of all who knew her. For many years she had been a sufferer, but bore her afflictions bravely and patiently, ready at all times to answer the final summons. Shortly before she lapsed into unconsciousness and passed to the spirit world she awoke from slumber and related that she had dreamed that she had died and was in heaven.
Before the altar of the Methodist church at 9 o'clock Saturday morning, amidst a profusion of flowers, exhaling the fragrance of love, the body of the worn and weary sleeper rested for a while, before being consigned to the bosom of Mother Earth in the family lot in the city cemetery. The pastor, Rev. Hugh H. Ellis, was in charge of the funeral rites, and spoke feelingly of the Christian virtues of this sainted Mother in Israel. Revs. T. L. McDonald and W. E. Lockler also had part in the service.
