U.S. Congressman. While engaged in newspaper work, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1854, relocated to Davenport, Iowa and began a law practice. He moved to Chatfield, Minnesota and continued the practice of law. Upon the admission of Minnesota as a State into the Union, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving (1858-59). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he moved to Colorado, in 1861, resumed the practice of law, also engaged in mining and was a member of the Colorado State constitutional convention in 1865. Moving to Montana, in 1866, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses, serving, (1867-71). An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, engaged in the practice of law in New York City, returned to Colorado, in 1879 and continued to practice law until his death.
