Rev. Abston Succumbs
To Paralytic Stroke
At Home in Davis
Funeral services for Rev. S. M. Abston, 78, retired minister and pioneer Davis resident, were held at the Methodist church yesterday afternoon.
The pastor, Rev. M. F. Bell, conducted the service and was assisted by Rev. W. I. Lowe of the Baptist church and Rev. E. E. Watson of the Christian church. Interment was in Green Hill cemetery.
Rev. Abston succumbed at his home in this city at 7 a.m. Tuesday, about 12 hours after having sustained a third stroke of paralysis. Several months ago he sustained two light strokes from which he never fully recovered.
Samuel Monroe Abston was born in Ringold, Ga., July 1, 1868. When a boy he moved to Arkansas, and at the age of 18 years began preaching the gospel, which he continued at intervals throughout his life. On Nov. 30, 1890, he married Miss Aurilla Reed and to this union eight children were born, two dying in infancy. Mr. Abston came to Davis in 1914 and spent the remained of his life here, doing all the good he could, making a legion of friends, and doing naught to harm anyone. "He was a good man" each friend said on learning of his death.
Mr. Abston operated a grist mill when he came to Davis, and later engaged in farming – all the time doing some preaching when an opportunity afforded.
He is survived by his widow, two daughters and four sons, namely, Mrs. B. Steele, San Diego, Calif.; Mrs. Ted Taylor, McAlester, Okla.; J. E. Abston, Hornsville, Mo.; Sewell and Ernest Abston, Davis, Okla., and Elmer Abston, Loco Hills, New Mexico, also 12 grand children.
