The following obituary appeared in the "Indiana Evening Gazette" (Indiana, PA) on Wednesday, March 26, 1944, page 2, column 8:
MRS. MARY ELLEN MEARS, 85, widow of late Irvin Mears, died at 3:15 P. M. Tuesday at the home of her son Charles E. Mears of Marion Center R. D., following a week's illness.
The deceased was a member of the Rayne Presbyterian Church. She was born Oct. 7, 1861, a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Tillerington) Manner.
She was the mother of nine children, five of which survive. They are: Mrs. Mabel Schugarts of Punxsutawney, Mrs. Mary Campbell of Johnstown, Charles E. Mears of Marion Center, Walter Quay Mears of Detroit, Mich., and William C. Mears of Clymer.
Eighteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren also survive.
Friends will be received at the Charles Mears residence until 12:30 P. M. Friday when the body will lie in state at the Evangelical United Brethern [sic] Church of Tanoma.
Services will be conducted at 2 P. M. by J. K. Boston. Interment will be in the Ruffner Cemetery. The Thomas Funeral Home of Marion Center is in charge of arrangements.
