The Howells Journal (Howells, Nebraska) - 09 Jan 1920, Fri - p.5
John Bauer, whose death occurred last week, was a native of Bavaria, Germany. At the time of his decease, which occurred on Tuesday evening, December twenty-third, at St. Joseph's Home for the Aged in this city (West Point), he was aged eighty-two years. He came to America forty-five years ago, and lived most of that time on the farm near Olean. Several years ago he sold out and moved to eastern Kanasa where he lived two years, going from there to northern Alabama where he lived a few years, then bought 320 acres of land at Montrose, MO., and lived there a short time. He then divided his land between his two sons and retired from farm life. While in Alabama he was bereaved of his life companion. Returning to Cuming County, he visited relative and friends a short, then he took up his abode at St. Joseph's Home for the Aged, where he spent his remaining years under the benign care of the Home. A year or two ago he married a lady of Dodge, who survives. Two sons and three daughters by his former wife, together with other relatives and many friends of olden days, remain to mourn his departure. His son, John Bauer, Jr., came from Missouri last week and on Friday evening took the body to Dodge, where funeral services were held on Saturday morning. Interment at Dodge. Mr. Bauer was a prominent man in the est part of this country. He was a leader in church affairs, he was school director in district No. 37 for many years, served as a member of the county board of supervisors several years, and in every way did his part well. It may truly be said of him that he left the world better his having lived in it. To the bereaved relatives we extend sincere sympathies. -- West Point Democrat.
