Sarah Rebecca Clark Lawrence was born March 1, 1845 at Mt. Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa and passed away July 8th 1923 at Compton, California. She was the daughter of Manly and Mary Ebba Clark, her father having passed on September 25, 1848. There were five children born to this union, two of which survive, Elizabeth Tucker and Celona Strait, both of Brooks, Iowa. Six children were the result of her mother's marriage to Joseph G. Baldwin, October 4, 1849 at Mt. Pleasant, four of whom survive, Steve, Manery, and Lem who lived on the old homestead near Brooks and Frank who lives at Los Angeles, California. She moved with her family to Adams County, Iowa, June 18, 1857 where she lived until her marriage to Clark D. Lawrence, November 2, 1864 who passed away July 1, 1903. Eight sons were the result of this union, three whom survive, Thos and John of Compton, California, Frank of Forsyth, Montana. She resided near the old homestead most all the time except a few years at Gotoland, Kansas and a short time at Forsyth, Montana. In August 1921 she moved to Long Beach, California where she resided with her two sons, until the first of June when they all moved to Compton, California, where she passed on. She joined to M. E. Church at North Cross, the church being on the old home place. She lived a consistent and practical Christian life and has a large circle of friends to mourn her loss. She had been a patient sufferer for about 6 months and was slowly improving until 7 a.m. July 6, when a hemorrhage of the brain caused loss of speech and she gradually failed until she passed peacefully away. Beside other relatives, she leaves 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Short services were held at Long Beach before leaving. Interment made at the Baldwin Cemetery. Funeral was held at the Community Hall at Brooks at 2:30 by Rev. J. Owen Smith.
